Total Dictation was created at NSU
The first Total Dictation took place in 2004 and was organized by students of the "Club for humanities", the creative association of NSU Department for Humanities
From 2004 to 2008
NSU lecturers were
the first to read the dictation

Since 2010 NSU has been the central platform of the international action and the place where authors of the dictation, contemporary Russian writers, read out their texts themselves
NSU is the expert center of Total Dictation
NSU lecturers of the Section of General and Russian Linguistics are the core of an expert group that develops methodological recommendations about the text, so that the assessment requirements of Total Dictation are the same on each of the thousands sites around the world
Novosibirsk State University is the first place that offered not only to be a center to write Total Dictation, but also to prepare participants. In 2011 free preparatory classes "Russian on Fridays" started at NSU. Today, such classes take place in several Russian Universities
NSU expert group does not only recommend how to assess the dictation, but also studies results: it tracks the dynamics of changes in language norms, finds controversial places and draws the attention of the Orthographic Commission of the RAS to them
Total Dictation at NSU is a place for real-life practice for students-philologists. By assessing the dictation together with older colleagues, students learn flexibility in using their theoretical knowledge
